The Ultimate Guide to Getting Traffic to your Blog
Traffic is the lifeblood of sites. It means readers, it means buyers, it means loyalty and sales. Starting out with a new site is an exciting venture. One of the most challenging parts is figuring out your traffic strategy.
Many think that all you need is to build your site. It goes far beyond that. A popular, bustling site is not made on the “built it, they will come” philosophy. Bloggers spend weeks, months, years perfecting their traffic strategy.
So much so that the 80/20 rule has been coined.
Whats the 80/20 rule?
This means you should spend 20% of your time on content creation and 80% on promotion/traffic. This means the emphasis is on promotion.
Creating awesome content is super important but what’s slaving over your laptop for days to crank out a keyword-rich, optimized, engaging 2,000 word article if nobody is reading it? So, the term 80/20 was coined and many bloggers go by it, myself included.
How exactly do you achieve this?
So, how exactly do you achieve this? How do you master the 80/20 rule? I’ll show you how. It’s a simple 3 step plan:
- Create a traffic strategy
- Execute it
- Testing and tweaks
I will break down each segment and when we’re done, you’ll have everything you need to create a booming traffic strategy.
Ready? Let’s kick things off.
Creating a poppin’ traffic strategy
Ok, so how is a traffic strategy created? It’s not as hard as you may think. We know the goal is to get traffic. We just have to figure out how to do that.
First, if you don’t have Google Analytics already, get it installed. It’s super easy and it’s important to know your traffic stats.
You wanna know where your audience hangs out so head to Google Analytics.
Go to>GA dashboard>Acquisition>All traffic >Referrals
This screen will show you where you are getting traffic from. You’ll be able to see from the data where your audience hangs out.
For me it’s Pinterest so, I know I need to target Pinterest hard and heavy to squeeze the most traffic out.
Next, you want to determine if you’ll use free or paid traffic building methods or a combination of the two. Here are some examples of each:
Examples of free traffic
- Social media
- Forum marketing
- Blog commenting
- Question/Answer sites
- Email marketing
- Word of mouth marketing
Examples of paid traffic
- Social media ads
- Paid discovery
- Influencer sponsored posts
- Solo ads
- Google Adwords
Make a plan and make a budget. Then, execute it!
Executing your traffic strategy
This means actually carrying out your plan. If your doing free social media promotion then get on social networks and be active. If you’ve decided on Facebook ads, set up your campaign and budget, and run it.
So many folks drop the ball at this stage. Some bloggers pay for a strategy to be made for them but fail to carry it out! Don’t procrastinate. Just do it!
Testing and tweaks
Once you execute your strategy you’ll wanna be sure to measure the results. Are you getting traffic? Are you making money? Do you have a good ROI?
Head back to Google Analytics once again and measure your success against your starting point. Don’t worry if you forgot to note your starting points. If you have GA, you can backdate to capture data from the past and compare it to where your stats fall currently.
Testing is super important. If something is working, try to improve it. If it’s not working then change it to try to improve results.
Examples of tweaks you can make:
- Change your posting schedule
- Lower or increase your budget
- Change design or style
- Stop a promo method and try something completely different
Pro Tip: If you’re doing paid ads and getting good results, increase your budget to increase results even further.
